Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 05/04/2012
This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Sudan (the): Weekly Humanitarian Bulletin 26 March - 1 April 2012 Wed, 04 Apr 2012 13:32:54 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Sudan (the), South Sudan (Republic of) Key Points ? In South Kordofan, Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Sudan People?s Liberation Army (SPLA) from South Sudan clashed fiercely in the oil producing region of Higlig. ? In South Kordofan, the Sudan People?s Liberation Movement ? North (SPLM-N) attacked the area south of Talodi, triggering the displacement of more than 25,000 civilians according Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) and other humanitarian partners. ? In Abyei, an aerial bombardment renews fear of conflict and further hampers potential returns of displaced people. ? In Central Darfur, HAC reports that 3,000 people fled fighting between SAF and the Sudan Liberation Army ? Abdel Wahid (SLA-AW). ? A Qatari delegation has completed a week long tour of Darfur, assessing needs of people who returned to their areas of origin since the beginning of 2011. The Qatari Government plans to assist return through Qatari NGOs as part of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur. |

HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES ? Internally displaced people registered in Jalozai camp since January 2012 increase to nearly 160,000, a 25 per cent rise within a week. ? Humanitarian agencies and local authorities step up efforts to provide assistance to IDPs living inside and outside the camp. ? More funds are required for the relief response as current funding will only meet people's needs until June, after which the continuation of critical humanitarian assistance may be affected. |
Afghanistan: Hese-Awal (Khenj) District, Central Region/Panjsher province, Flood Incident Report No. 1. It covers the period from 31March to 3 Apr 2012. The next report will be issued soon. I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES
II. Situation Overview On 31 March, flash floods damaged 67 houses, 19 of them severely, in Dumama and Karez villages in Hese-Awal (Khenj) district of Panjsher province. Inter-Agency joint assessments with government departments were completed on 2 April. III.Humanitarian Needs and Response On 2 April, a joint assessment by IOM, Care International, ANDMA, DoRRD, and other PDMC representatives found out that 67 houses were damaged, 19 of them severely. The report did not indicate any casualties or displacements. Based on the assessment, ARCS provided tents and kitchen kits to 19 families, whose houses had been severely damaged. ANDMA distributed rice 50 kg per household. DoRRD distributed non-food and hygiene kits to 67 affected families. According to IOM, this assistance met the needs of the affected population. IV. Coordination OCHA is monitoring the situation in close collaboration with ANDMA and IOM. On-going OCHA civil-military coordination with the 201 Afghan National Army (ANA) seeks to prevent duplication. V. Funding At this point, no additional funding is required. All humanitarian partners, including donors and recipient agencies, are encouraged to inform OCHA's Financial Tracking Service (FTS - http://fts.unocha.org ) of cash and in-kind contributions by e-mailing: fts@un.org |
