Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 04/04/2012
This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Democratic Republic of the Congo (the): Cholera: Situation in the WHO African Region Tue, 03 Apr 2012 14:27:14 +0000 A total of 10 691 cases and 179 deaths (CFR: 1.7%) reported from 13 countries as of 29 February 2012. Highlight Between January and February 2012, a cumulative total of 10 691 cases and 178 deaths were reported from 13 countries ( CFR: 1.7%). The Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone accounted for 86% of the total number of cases and 65% of the total number of deaths (Table 1, Figs 1 and 2) Actions taken WHO continues to provide support to the affected countries in the areas of case management, active surveillance, outbreak investigation, sensitization, co-ordination and resource mobilization. Nigeria: Nigeria: Lassa Fever outbreak (Situation as of 22 March, 2012) Tue, 03 Apr 2012 14:19:39 +0000 A total of 623 cases and 70 deaths (CFR: 11.2%) were reported from 19 states Event description At the beginning of 2012, WHO was notified by The Federal Ministry of Health in Nigeria of an outbreak of Lassa fever. As of March 22, 2012, 623 cases including 70 deaths (CFR 11.2%) have been reported from 19 out of 36 States. Of these, 108 have been laboratory confirmed. Three doctors and four nurses were reported to be among the fatalities. Actions taken The Federal and State governments are implementing the following preventive and control measures with support from WHO: enhancement of disease surveillance, case management, infection and prevention control, training of health workers and sensitization of the population. 05 Dec 2011 Onset of the outbreak 05 - 09 Dec 2011 Investigation and response teams deployed in Lagos, Gombe, Rivers and Delta States.
