Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 12/23/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

  • While the Deyr rains have subsided in many parts of the Lower and Middle Juba regions, flooding continues to affect many settlements in Middle Juba.

  • Increasing rates of suspected malaria cases were reported this week in Lower and Middle Juba. WHO is warning of possible outbreaks of waterborne diseases in districts affected by flash flooding in recent weeks.

  • WHO has called on health partners to intensify cholera preventative activities in Mogadishu.

  • Bad roads due to rains continue to hamper the delivery of food assistance to people in need in Bay, threatening to reverse gains made in reducing malnutrition rates in the region.
