Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 10/14/2011
This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Inondations Rapport de Situation No. 1, 11 Octobre 2011 Fri, 14 Oct 2011 02:01:37 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Haiti Ce rapport est produit par OCHA en collaboration avec les partenaires humanitaires. Il a ete publie par le bureau de terrain d?OCHA Haiti. Il couvre la periode du 6 au 11 octobre 2011. Le prochain rapport sera publie le ou autour du 12 octobre. I. FAITS SAILLANTS ? Deux personnes sont portees disparues suite aux pluies torrentielles qui se sont abattues sur la partie sud du pays. ? Quelque 416 familles ont ete evacuees vers des abris d?urgence dans le departement du Sud. ? Le manque de financement affecte la reponse aux flambees de cholera qui font suite aux fortes pluies dans les departements du Sud et des Nippes. II. Apercu de la situation Les fortes pluies qui se sont abattues sur la partie du sud du pays du 6 au 10 octobre ont cause d?importantes inondations dans les departements du Sud, des Nippes et de la Grande Anse. Deux personnes sont portees disparues a Port-a-Piment, dans le departement du Sud. Le Centre des operations d?urgence du departement du Sud (COUD) a ete active le 10 octobre par les autorites. Une montee de 215 mm du niveau des eaux de toutes les rivieres du departement a entraine des inondations importantes dans les communes et localites suivantes : les Cayes, Port-a-Piment, Camp Perrin, Coteau et Damassin. Des inondations ont egalement ete signalees a Baraderes et a l'Azile, dans le departement des Nippes, ainsi qu?a Pestel et Corail dans le departement de la Grande Anse. Selon des estimations preliminaires, 416 menages ont ete evacues vers des abris d'urgence. Les pluies torrentielles ont egalement entraine une augmentation du nombre de nouveaux cas de cholera et de deces dans les departements des Nippes et du Sud a un moment ou un manque de financement menace la reponse actuelle a l'epidemie de cholera. |
Typhoon Nelgae and Nesat - Situation Report No. 5 Thu, 13 Oct 2011 10:58:17 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Philippines (the) I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES ? Over four million people were affected by the two typhoons with over 254,400 people requiring assistance, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). ? Limited access by road and intermittent access by air and sea is hampering relief and assessment efforts along the coastal areas of Islabela Province. ? The Government has led the response and has not formally requested international assistance through a letter from the NDRRMC to the Humanitarian Coordinator. Individual line ministries have requested support from humanitarian agencies as needed. |

Refugees and IDPs in South Kordofan and Blue Nile States (as of 11 October 2011) Thu, 13 Oct 2011 09:17:12 +0000 Ongoing conflict between Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Sudanese People?s Liberation Movement - North (SPLM-N) has led to new displacements and refugees from both South Kordofan and Blue Nile states. UNHCR now reports 27,500 refugees have crossed in to Ethiopia, necessitating the opening of a new refugee camp.
