Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 10/15/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Tropical Cyclone IRWIN-11 of Saffir-Simpson Category 1 affected few people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and few people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, few people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge.

I. FAITS SAILLANTS

  • Le retour spontane des refugies ivoiriens dans leurs villages d'origine se fait progressivement dans le Moyen Cavally.

  • L?etude conjointe d?Oxfam / Conseil danois des refugies et Care a montre que la securite, la disponibilite de l'assistance humanitaire et le retablissement de l?etat de droit sont des facteurs de motivation pour le retour des refugies et deplaces.

  • Au milieu de l'epidemie de cholera en Afrique occidentale et centrale, les acteurs humanitaires en Cote d'Ivoire prennent des mesures preventives.

  • Le Plan d?Urgence de l?Action Humanitaire pour la Cote d?Ivoire et quatre pays voisins est finance a hauteur de 30 pour cent US$86,6 million sur un montant total requis de $292 million.

This report is produced by OCHA Yemen with inputs from the Humanitarian Country Team in collaboration with humanitarian partners. It covers the period from 31 August 2011 to 6 October 2011. The next report will be issued on or around 28 October 2011.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

? Violent confrontations have erupted in Sana?a and reportedly killed 102 people, including civilians.

? While the Government has reported to have regained control over Zinjibar, heavy conflict continues in Abyan Governorate and the number of people displaced by the violence continues to increase.

? Food insecurity and malnutrition indicators in Yemen are of increasing concern. Since January 2011, food prices have increased by an average of 46% and the price of bread is 50% above what it was only a few months ago.

? Throughout Yemen, children?s access to education is challenged by occupation of schools by IDPs, use of school premises by armed groups, lack of proper facilities and unsafe access conditions.

? For the second time this year, insecurity has prompted the UN to temporarily reduce the presence of its international staff in Yemen.

? Despite the constraints of insecurity, lack of access and limited staff, the Humanitarian Community maintains critical programmes throughout Yemen and is finalizing a strategy for the 2012 Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

? According to NDMA, more than 8.9 million people have been affected by the floods in Sindh and Balochistan.

? 18% of the assessed funding requirements have been received so far (64.5 of 357 million US$ requested in the Rapid Response Plan launched on 18 September 2011). In the absence of additional funding, stocks will be depleted by the end of October.

? Needs are increasing with the onset of winter, the outbreak of water and vector borne diseases, as well as the upcoming Rabi planting season.

UNOSAT  14 Oct 2011 9:14:06 AM newThis map presents the standing flood waters over the affected Central Provinces of Thailand based on analysis of satellite data recorded 13 October 2011.A preliminary analysis show extensive flooding over the provinces of Phara Nakhan Si Ayudhya, Nakhon Sawan, Chaitan,Pathum Thani, Nakon Pathon, Ang Thong, Lopburi,Singburi and Suphanburi. This analysis has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR /UNOSAT.
