Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 10/13/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

? Le Directeur de la Division de la coordination et des interventions du Bureau de la Coordination des Affaires Humanitaires (OCHA), John Ging, a entame le 10 octobre une visite de travail en Republique Democratique du Congo (RDC) afin de s'enquerir de la situation humanitaire dans le pays. Durant sa mission qui va jusqu?au 15 octobre, M. Ging s'entretiendra avec les autorites congolaises, le Coordonnateur de l'action humanitaire en RDC, les agences des Nations Unies ainsi que les ONG nationales et internationales oeuvrant dans l'humanitaire. M. John Ging visitera le Nord-Kivu et la Province Orientale. Cette mission intervient dans un contexte securitaire preoccupant pour les acteurs humanitaires. La semaine derniere, cinq travailleurs humanitaires ont ete tues au Sud-Kivu, la premiere attaque mortelle contre la communaute humanitaire en 2011.

? L?epidemie de cholera persiste dans quatre provinces situees le long du fleuve Congo dont le Bandundu, l?Equateur, la Ville de Kinshasa, ainsi que la Province Orientale. Au 10 octobre, un total de 7 008 cas dont 390 deces ont ete rapportes selon la repartition suivante : 2 741 cas dont 151 deces dans l?Equateur, 2 127 cas dont 125 deces pour le Bandundu, 1 618 cas dont 86 deces pour la Province Orientale et 522 cas dont 28 deces pour la Ville de Kinshasa. Par ailleurs, dans certaines provinces de l?est du pays, endemique au cholera dont le Katanga, le Maniema, le Nord-Kivu et le Sud-Kivu, on enregistre de plus en plus de cas de cholera. Au 12 octobre, 9 357 cas y etaient rapportes. Soit un total de 16 365 cas dont 467 deces pour toute la RDC. La communaute humanitaire reste mobilisee pour la prise en charge des cas et des actions de prevention et de sensibilisation des communautes.
