Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 9/22/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Tropical Cyclone ROKE-11 of Saffir-Simpson Category 4 affected 94.8 million people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and 35 million people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, 2.3 million people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge.

Epidemie de cholera

La situation du cholera au 20 septembre 2011 indiquait un total de 6 298 cas enregistres dont 346 deces pour les Provinces de Bandundu, de l?Equateur, de Kinshasa et la Province Orientale. La Province de l?Equateur, avec 2 464 cas dont 136 deces, est la province la plus touchee par l?epidemie. Le Bandundu totalise 1 815 cas dont 110 deces alors que la Ville de Kinshasa compte 440 cas dont 26 deces. La Province Orientale a rapporte 1 579 cas dont 74 deces.

Les partenaires humanitaires continuent a apporter leur appui au Gouvernement congolais dans la prise en charge des cas dans les Centres et Unites de traitement de cholera et menent des campagnes de sensibilisation a l?hygiene et a l?assainissement pour prevenir la maladie.

Province du Nord-Kivu

Les travailleurs humanitaires enleves par deux groupes armes dans les Territoires de Walikale et de Lubero, ont ete finalement tous liberes en date du 18 septembre. Douze membres de deux ONG (nationale et internationale) avaient ete enleves les 9 et 10 septembre dernier dans les deux territoires. Cinq membres avaient pu s?echapper, laissant sept autres aux mains des ravisseurs. Ces rapts avaient entraine la suspension temporaire des mouvements des humanitaires sur certains axes de ces territoires. Une recommandation a ete faite aux partenaires humanitaires evoluant sur les axes Kibua ? Mpofi ? Walikale (a l?est de Walikale) et Kaseghe ? Alimbongo (sud-ouest Lubero), de limiter, dans la mesure du possible, leurs mouvements et de faire preuve de prudence en attendant que la situation securitaire dans ces deux zones soit retablie.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

? A 6.9 magnitude earthquake in a mountainous area of India caused widespread damage in parts of India, Nepal, China, and Bhutan.

? Aid has started to reach the worst affected area in Sikkim as access improved with roads reopened, and telecommunications and power supplies restored.

? Number of casualties increased to 87 in the affected areas in India, Nepal and China.

? No international assistance is required to date.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • A recount of applicants for refugee status in Dadaab has found large numbers attempting double registration. The apparent large backlog in applications for registration has been adjusted from 40,000 to 1,909. The average daily arrival rate for the past week was about 1,100 people per day.

  • Deteriorating security situation along Somali border and around Dadaab; a vehicle belonging to an international NGO has been hijacked in Hagadera camp.

  • Maize prices are on a downward trend but remain significantly above the five-year average

This report is produced by OCHA Somalia in collaboration with humanitarian partners. It was issued by OCHA in New York. It covers the period from 15 to 20 September 2011. The next report will be issued on 27 September 2011.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

  • Partners are scaling up response activities in order to reach the worst-affected population to avert further unnecessary deaths. Food assistance partners have reached 1.39 million people in crisis so far in the first two weeks of September, compared to 1.3 million throughout the month of August.

  • An estimated 585,000 urban dwellers in Somalia are projected to be in crisis by December if interventions are not scaled up, a quarter more than the first half of the year.

  • According to UNICEF, children constitute 80 per cent of the worst-affected population in the current famine.
