This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

| Humanitarian Bulletin - Weekly Humanitarian Highlights in Ethiopia, 26 September 2011 Mon, 26 Sep 2011 14:01:24 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan (the) Refugee Update Somali Region: According to UNHCR, there has been a slight increase in the number of new arrivals from Somalia over the past few weeks, with an average daily arrival rate of 300 at present. However, the reason for this increase is yet to be determined. Some 83,000 refugees from Somalia have crossed into Ethiopia in the Dollo Ado area since January 2011 bringing the total number of refugees in the Dollo Ado camps to 124,248 as of 23 September. The number of measles cases reported in Kobe camp has decreased significantly, with only one case (no fatality) reported over the course of the last week. The decrease comes as a result of the measles vaccination campaign carried out in all four camps in Dollo Ado. Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD) mitigation and preparedness activities are ongoing. To address protection concerns for women collecting firewood, ZOA, Western Ethiopia: The influx of refugees from Sudan?s Blue Nile State continues as a result of the insecurity that has prevailed in the region since early September. In coordination with UNHCR and WFP, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and the Disaster Risk Management and Food Security Sector have planned to send an assessment team to Benishangul Gumuz in order to assess the refugee situation in Sherkole camp and in the region. At present, UNHCR is conducting a registration campaign and will provide an official figure for the number of refugees who have crossed the border upon its completion. Many of the refugees are reportedly crossing and re-crossing the border depending on the security situation on the Sudan side and prefer to remain in the host community. To date, only 3,500 of the new arrivals have agreed to be transferred to Sherkole refugee camp in Beneshangul Gumuz region. UNICEF has provided 4,500 jerry cans and 6 Essential Drug Kits, to support the WASH and health response, and has provided financial support to meet the operational cost of six mobile health and nutrition teams to the Regional Health Bureau and UNHCR. Given that this is the peak malaria transmission season, UNICEF also supplied 2,400 long-lasting insecticide-treated nets and logistical support to the Ministry of Health to release additional supplies to treat malaria. However, some major gaps remain unmet in the health and WASH sectors. For more information, contact: gegziabk@unhcr.org and awesterbeek@unicef.org Nutrition Update TFP admissions in SNNPR have decreased for a third month in a row, down 30% in August (7,190 with 92% reporting rate) from July (10,233 with 96% reporting rate), and 26% in July from June. TFP admissions in Tigray have also decreased by 36% in August (757 with 84% reporting rate) compared with July levels (1,189 with 90% reporting rate). Sufficient information for other regions is not yet available as the reporting rate for Amhara, Beneshangul Gumuz, Oromia and Somali remains below 80%. However, by 22 August 2011, some 212,491 children had been admitted for treatment of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in the 8,900 TFP sites across the country since January 2011, with an average reporting rate of 82%. TFP service coverage in ?Priority 1? hotspot woredas shows positive trend. Of the 152 Priority 1 hotspot woredas in the five regions of Amhara, Oromia, SNNP Somali and Tigray regions, 95% (144 woredas) are covered by Outpatient Therapeutic Programme (OTP) sites. Therapeutic Feeding Units (TFU) cover 127 woredas (83.5%), while Targeted Supplementary Feeding (TSF) coverage increased from 98 woredas in early August to 127 in September. Coverage in Priority 2 woredas as of September was also good, with 97% of the Priority 2 woredas covered by OTPs, 87% covered by TFUs and 63% covered by TSF. Of note, while all Priority 1 woredas are eligible for TSF, not all Priority 2 woredas are. For more information, contact: isaackm@dppc.gov.et Rainfall Update Good rains were reported over parts of the Somali region, including Jijiga and Shinile zones and in parts of Degehabur, Fik and Liben zones. Moderate rainfall was received over large parts of Oromia region, with the exception of Borena and Bale zones and one woreda (Kumbi) in East Hararghe. All zones in SNNPR received sufficient rains during the past week, except Ale woreda in Segen Areas Peoples? zone and Hamer and Dasenech woredas in South Omo zone. In Afar region, rainfall has been erratic and inadequate in the north and north-eastern areas. Tigray received pockets of moderate rainfall. Until information is received on the impact of the current rains on the water situation of these regions, water trucking activities are continuing. Currently, 120 trucks are operational in Somali (58 trucks), Oromia (42 trucks), Tigray (13 trucks) and Afar (7 trucks) regions supported by the Government and partners. The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) recently donated 14 water trucks to the Ministry of Water and Energy. Two trucks will be dispatched to Somali region, five to Oromia, two each in Afar, SNNPR and Tigray and one in Amhara region. Separately, following flood threats areas surrounding Lake Tana (Amhara), woreda officials in Fogera and Dembia have decided to relocate 7,600 and 400 people respectively to safer areas. A joint rapid assessment is planned to assess the humanitarian situation in the area. For more information, contact: awesterbeek@unicef.org Health Update Ahead of the Gishen Mariam religious event in Amhara from 26 September to 2 October 2011, Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD) prevention and preparedness activities have been initiated by regional authorities and partners. UNICEF has sent communication materials (500 AWD posters and 15,000 AWD brochures), and emergency water kit for community level water treatment, household level water treatment chemicals, water containers and a squatting plate (for latrine construction) to the South Wollo Zonal Water Resources department. Elsewhere in the country, efforts have been focused on mitigation and preparedness in recognition of the risk of transmission from current cholera outbreaks in Djibouti and Somalia. Contingency plans have been prepared and circulated and prepositioning of supplies is ongoing. Case Treatment Centres (CTCs) and hygiene promotion are being provided to the refugee population and at-risk communities. Regions currently under surveillance include Somali (Kebridehar and Ayisha woredas), Oromia region (Chiro and Miesso woredas), and one kebele of Dire Dawa. | Earthquake Update: Situation Report no. 4 Mon, 26 Sep 2011 05:32:19 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Nepal Country: Nepal This report is produced by OCHA Humanitarian Support Unit, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator?s Office in collaboration with humanitarian partners. I . Situation Overview An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale affected the eastern region of Nepal, as well as the capital of Kathmandu in the Central Region, at around 6:25 pm Nepal time on 18 September 2011. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) and the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) continues to coordinate the response to the earthquake. Latest figures released on 23 September by the NEOC, indicate that the number of fatalities remains at 6 persons, 24 people are severely injured and 160 persons have minor injuries. 2986 persons are reportedly displaced. 2322 houses/buildings are completely destroyed and 2780 partially damaged. 81 public buildings (Government infrastructures such as health facilities, community buildings, schools, electricity stations etc) are reported to be destroyed with a further 406 buildings partially damaged. There remain some discrepancies in the corroboration of damage estimates, especially the number of schools and health facilities damaged or destroyed. MoHA will meet with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) to resolve this issue. There are still difficulties in accessing some remote areas and reports and updates continue to be received at the NEOC from previously inaccessible areas. Additional images acquired since 31 October 2010 were also reviewed. Analysis determined multiple areas of likely combat taking place as forces aligned with the National Transitional Council sought to displace forces loyal to the Colonel Muammar al-Qadhafi.
