Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 8/5/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

This report is produced by OCHA in collaboration with humanitarian partners. It is issued by OCHA Eastern Africa. It covers the period from 28 July to 3 August.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

  • Famine has been declared in three new areas in Somalia
  • The number of those in need of assistance has risen to 12.42 million.
  • The 29 July "Humanitarian Requirements for the Horn of Africa Drought" document identifies $1.4 billion in contributions still needed.
  • The United States State Department announced on 2 August that it has ?issued new guidance to allow more flexibility and to provide a wider range of aid to a larger number of areas in need? in Somalia.
  • On 1 August, an attempted suicide attack on an African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) base in Mogadishu was thwarted, although several died in subsequent gunfire.
  • A new fund-raising campaign, ?Kenyans4Kenya?, aims to raise KES 500 million ($5.4 million) in four weeks. It has raised some $2m since its 27 July launch.

This report is produced by OCHA Somalia in collaboration with humanitarian partners. It was issued by OCHA in New York. It covers the period from 1 to 3 August 2011. The next report will be issued on 8 August 2011.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

? Famine has been declared in three new areas of southern Somalia today

? 3.7 million people are in crisis, with 3.2 million people in need of immediate, lifesaving assistance (2.8 million people in need are located in south central Somalia).

? Of the 2.8 million people in urgent need of food aid in southern Somalia relief organizations are only reaching an estimated 20 per cent.

? An estimated 100,000 displaced people have moved to Mogadishu in the last two months due to the drought and famine and the number is growing every day

? In the last two weeks the Nutrition Cluster has airlifted 84 tons of therapeutic food into Mogadishu to treat 29,400 malnourished children for one month

? ICRC has commenced its first large-scale food distribution in southern and central Somalia since the beginning of the year reaching 162,000 people
