Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 8/6/2011
This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Grave situacion en el suroccidente del pais: Entre el 9 y el 10 de julio, ataques simultaneos de las FARC en siete municipios del Norte del Cauca dejaron tres civiles muertos y al menos 128 heridos. Los ataques en cascos urbanos de los municipios de la zona, que se registran desde 2010, se ha prolongado a lo largo del mes de julio. Los combates sostenidos entre grupos armados en la region del Pacifico siguen generando desplazamientos en comunidades rurales de Cauca y Narino. En Buenaventura, el desplazamiento urbano viene incrementandose desde finales de junio por el deterioro en las condiciones de seguridad. ? Desplazamientos en territorio de comunidades indigenas: Amenazas y homicidios generaron desplazamientos masivos y multifamiliares entre comunidades indigenas en Arauca y Cordoba. ? Persisten los riesgos para comunidades indigenas y afrocolombianas, ninos ninas y adolescentes en Narino, Cordoba, Antioquia y Putumayo: Lideres comunitarios fueron victimas de amenazas y homicidios en Narino y Cordoba. En Medellin, las autoridades expresaron preocupacion por la situacion de ninos, ninas y adolescentes por causa de la violencia. Tanto los grupos etnicos como la ninez siguen siendo particularmente vulnerables en el marco del conflicto armado ? A serious humanitarian situation persists in the South West: Between 9 and 10 July, simultaneous attacks by the FARC in seven municipalities of Northern Cauca department, left three civilians dead and at least 128 wounded. There is growing concern by the gaps in the protection of civilians in the area. The sustained fighting between armed groups in the Pacific region continues to generate displacement in rural and urban communities of Cauca, Valle del Cauca and Narino. ? Displacement in indigenous territories: Threats and killings triggered displacements among indigenous communities in Arauca and Cordoba. ? Risks for indigenous and Afro-Colombian children and adolescents in Narino, Cordoba, ? Follow-up: Rainy season: The National environmental authority (IDEAM) reported that the dry season already began in the Andean region. In the Caribbean region, rainfall is above average, especially in La Guajira, southern parts of Sucre and Bolivar. Between April and July 2011, there were 988,441 people affected and 138 dead. |

Key Overall Developments Somalia has an approximate population of 7.5 million people, of whom 3.7 million people are currently in crisis nationwide. Among these, 3.2 million people need immediate, lifesaving assistance (2.8 million or 80% are in the south of Somalia). There are 390,000 acutely malnourished children in Somalia of which 320,000 are in the south, representing 82% of the acutely malnourished children in the country. In the next 12 months there are expected to be 780,000 acutely malnourished children in Somalia, 640,000 of whom will be in Southern Somalia. On 3 August 2011, three new areas in southern Somalia were declared to have deteriorated into a famine situation. These new areas are parts of Middle Shabelle region, the Afgooye Corridor settlements home to roughly 400,000 displaced people since 2007, and parts of Mogadishu which are hosting displaced populations. This recent announcement follows a declaration of famine in two regions of south Bakool and Lower Shabelle two weeks ago, and affirms warning by the Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU) that famine will spread to all the eight southern regions in six weeks time. |

Variation in food prices, despite a relative stability, has been another area of humanitarian interest for the second quarter. | Overview Map of Refugee Camps in Dadaab, Garissa, N.Eastern, Kenya UNOSAT 5 Aug 2011 6:33:31 PM This map presents satellite-derived information on the current extent and location of the Ifo I and Ifo II camps (approved by Kenyan authorities for operation on 14 July 2011) within the Dadaab area. There is clear tent expansion of Ifo I camp and the beginings of organized tent placement in the southern edge of Ifo II camp.  Emergency Assessment of Melkadida Camp; Dolo Ado, Ethiopia (as of 31 July 2011) UNOSAT 5 Aug 2011 11:52:30 AM This assessment of the Melkadid camp near the Ethiopian border town of Dolo was done at the request of UNHCR in support of emergency humanitarian planning in the area following the recent influx of Somali refugees. Satellite imagery acquired on 31 July 2011 over the camp was used for a tent assessment and infrastructure. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field.  Satellite Imagery Review of Ash Deposit Patterns from Puyehue-Cordon Caulle Volcanic Complex UNOSAT 5 Aug 2011 11:06:05 AM Summary Points 1. Main eruption of ash flow is from the Cordon Caulle fissure on northern face of mountain, not the main Puyehue Caldera 2. Initial ash flow detected on 4 June 2011 with first distinct Thermal signatures detected on morning of 5 June 2011 3. 3D Topographic review of border terrain strongly suggests no direct threat of volcanic induced lahars event from CordonCaullefissure (or PuyehueCaldera) within Argentina, due to distinct watershed boundary along Andes 4. Ash cloud drift direction has ranged within a broad 150 degree cone almost entirely over Argentinean territory, however the majority of measured ash clouds were drifting within a smaller cone east-southeast (between 90-140 degrees) with a secondary cone north-northeast (350-90 degrees) 5. The zone of heaviest ash deposition appears within imagery to be within a zone approximately 10,000km2 in area, ranging up to 110km from the volcanic fissure 6. There were clearly visible ash deposits on Argentinean lake surfaces within 110km of the volcano on 11 June 2011 * Almost the entire surface of LagoA. Gallardo was covered in ash (12km2) * Ash drifts over 30km long and with max width of 800m visible on Lago Nahuel Huapi DMC SPOT MODIS Landsat |
