This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

It was issued by OCHA in New York. It covers the period from 8 to 10 August 2011. The next report will be issued on or 15 August 2011. I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES ? A considerable increase in aid has been delivered in Mogadishu, despite continued skirmishes ? The emergency revision of the Somalia Consolidated Appeal has been completed; US$1.06 billion is being requested, of which $500 million has been received ? Situation humanitaire en Republique Democratique du Congo - Note d?information hebdomadaire a la presse, 10 aout 2011 Wed, 10 Aug 2011 13:17:39 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Democratic Republic of the Congo (the), Rwanda Epidemie de cholera ? Le cap de 5 000 cas a ete franchi cette semaine avec un total de 5 088 cas dont 296. A la date du 9 aout, les statistiques de l?epidemie de cholera indiquent 1 604 cas dont 100 deces pour la Province du Bandundu, 1 627 cas dont 93 deces pour la Province de l?Equateur, 1 586 cas dont 82 deces dans la Province Orientale et 271 cas dont 21 deces pour la ville de Kinshasa. Dans le cadre de la reponse a l?epidemie, l?ONG Oxfam intervient en Equateur dans 4 zones de sante ou il y a flambee de cholera, avec l?installation de 35 points de chloration d?eau a Mbandaka et 32 a Makanza. Une trentaine de nouveaux points de chloration va etre installee au courant de cette semaine a Lukolela. Depuis le debut de la crise a Bolobo, dans la Province du Bandundu, OXFAM a fourni de l?eau potable a quelque 128 000 personnes a partir de 31 points de chloration d?une capacite moyenne de plus de 300 000 litres d?eau potable par jour. Oxfam travaille avec des partenaires locaux dans des programmes de promotion d?hygiene a travers les radios locales et le theatre communautaire. |
Inundaciones 2010-2011: Informe de Situacion 37 Wed, 10 Aug 2011 11:43:07 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs I. PRIORIDADES/PUNTOS DESTACADOS ? Durante abril-julio 2011 se registraron 988.441 personas afectadas y 138 muertos. El acumulado 2010-2011 registra cerca de 4 millones de personas afectadas, 925.4330 familias y 491 muertos por la temporada invernal, 16.269 viviendas destruidas y 545.940 viviendas averiadas. ? El IDEAM, informa que comienza el periodo seco (menos lluvias) en la region andina y alerta ante la ocurrencia de posibles incendios. ? Ante el inicio de la segunda temporada de lluvias en la region Caribe la DGR recomienda mantener activos los Planes de Emergencia y Contingencia para Inundaciones y estar atentos a las recomendaciones que los organismos tecnicos del Sistema puedan emitir en determinado momento. ? Para la respuesta de la temporada invernal el Gobierno destino mas de $7 billones de pesos de los cuales se encuentran en ejecucion $ 5.5 billones, por ejecutar $1.6 billones, del total $4.5 billones estan a cargo de Colombia Humanitaria para ayuda humanitaria. Debido a continuas hostilidades en la zona y la existencia de minas, 53 familias (144 personas), se han desplazado de zona rural del municipio de Pradera hacia el casco urbano. ? Diecisiete familias (60 personas) del Resguardo indigena de La Fria, han tenido que resguardarse de los combates. ? Es el segundo desplazamiento masivo que se presenta en la misma zona, en los ultimos cuatro meses. |
Horn of Africa Drought Crisis Updates & Developments - 9 August 2011 Wed, 10 Aug 2011 06:38:44 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya SITUATION UPDATES ? From 1 ? 4 August, the number of daily arrivals of Somali refugees arriving at the Dadaab camps in Kenya has increased. About 1,500 new refugees arrive each day, an increase from 1,300 in July. ? Violence during a food distribution left seven dead in Mogadishu on 5 August. ? The Horn of Africa Drought Appeal is 46 per cent funded, requiring an additional US$1.4 billion. ? The Famine Early Warning Systems Network forecasts worsening drought conditions for the coming months, particularly in northern Kenya, with a food insecure population of 3.2 million. ? On 6 August al-Shabaab started to pull out from Mogadishu. ? The United States has approved $105 million in new drought and famine aid to East Africa. |

Crisis Atlas of Afgooye Corridor, Somalia (28 July 2011) UNOSAT 10 Aug 2011 3:30:55 PM This atlas provides detailed crisis satellite imagery coverage over the large concentration of Somali IDPs encamped along the main road between the cities of Afgooye and Mogadishu, Somalia. Note certain areas populated with IDP tent shelters are not visible within the imagery because of local cloud cover. It is produced by UNITAR/UNOSAT in support of international humanitarian assistance in the Horn of Africa following the extreme drought. The atlas is based on crisis satellite imagery acquired on 28 July 2011 and has been designed for easy printing and readability on A4 and A3 paper. Individual map sheets were designed at 1:7,500 scale. Update 1: Emergency Assessment of Ifo Refugee Camps, Garissa, N. Eastern, Kenya Wed, 10 Aug 2011 08:35:38 +0000 Source: UN Institute for Training and Research, UNOSAT This map presents satellite-derived information on the current extent and location of the Ifo camp and Ifo extension (approved by Kenyan authorities for operation on 14 July 2011) within the Dadaab area. There is clear tent expansion of Ifo camp and the beginings of organized tent placement in the southern edge of the Ifo extension. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send feedback to UNITAR/UNOSAT at the contact information below.
