Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 8/10/2011
This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Current tropical cyclones (source JRC and Pacific Disaster Center)
  | Automatic impact report (JRC)  THIRTEEN-11 in NWPacificPDC—10 Aug 2011   Tropical Depression THIRTEEN-11 affected few people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and few people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, few people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge. |

Sudan and South Sudan have reached an agreement on border monitoring. ? Returns to South Sudan continue, with some 3,000 returnees leaving Kosti for Adok, Bor and Juba. ? Ethiopian peacekeepers continue to arrive in the Abyei area, with some 1,300 troops already deployed. ? Landmines and unexploded ordnance remain a major risk in Abyei, with four peacekeepers killed and seven injured by a landmine explosion this week. ? Fighting has continued in South Kordofan and access restrictions continue to affect the provision of relief aid to affected communities. |

On 6 August Al-Shabaab started their withdrawal from Mogadishu ? Famine has now been declared in five areas in southern Somalia and is expected to spread across all regions of the south in the coming four to six weeks ?  Update 1: Emergency Assessment of Ifo Refugee Camps, Garissa, N.Eastern, Kenya UNOSAT 9 Aug 2011 2:02:43 PM This map presents satellite-derived information on the current extent and location of the Ifo camp and Ifo extension (approved by Kenyan authorities for operation on 14 July 2011) within the Dadaab area. There is clear tent expansion of Ifo camp and the beginings of organized tent placement in the southern edge of the Ifo extension. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send feedback to UNITAR/UNOSAT at the contact information below.
