Weekly Humanitarian Bulletin Issue # 24, 10-17 June 2011 Fri, 17 Jun 2011 12:52:14 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Somalia Conflict and Displacement Mogadishu: During the week, sporadic fighting was reported between the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) troops, assisted by the African Union Mission in Somalia, against Al Shabaab. Sources indicate that nearly a dozen people were killed while more than 90 others were wounded during different skirmishes. WHO reports a 53 per cent decline in the number of weapon-related casualties reported in the three main hospitals. From 1-12 June, 682 casualties were treated bringing the total number of weapon-related injuries since January to 5,260 including 1,450 children under 5 years of age. On 10 June, the TFG minister for Internal Security, Abdishakur Sheikh Hasan, was killed in a suicide operation by a woman who was reportedly a relative. The minister was rushed to hospital where he died on arrival. Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack. Hiraan region: On 15 June, heavy fighting erupted between Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jamaa and Al Shabaab in Dirimadle, Hiraan region. Several combatant deaths and casualties were reported; civilian populations were not affected and no displacement was reported. The area is tense and both sides are reportedly reinforcing. Unconfirmed numbers of people continue to be displaced mainly from Bay and Bakool regions moving to neighbouring regions of Gedo and the Jubas, while others are moving to Kenyan and Ethiopian refugee camps. The reasons for the movement are mainly the drought and high food prices affecting most of the population across Somalia. According to UNHCR Kenya, 2,600 Somalis were registered in Dadaab refugee camps during the week 6-12 June. UNHCR reports that 26,000 people were displaced within Somalia since 1 May, with 15,000 people displaced from Mogadishu due to the ongoing fighting. Funding Update Common Humanitarian Response Fund (CHF) emergency reserve: The Humanitarian Coordinator recently approved US$1.2 million from the CHF emergency reserve for projects in the Nutrition, Livelihoods and WASH clusters. The number of people in need has increased due to conflict and the effects of the drought. |
