Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 6/17/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Tropical Storm SIX-11 affected few people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and few people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, few people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge.

This report is produced by OCHA in collaboration with humanitarian partners. It was issued by OCHA Libya. It covers the period from 9 to 16 June. The next report will be issued on or around 23 June.

  • The Libyan Ministry of Health Centre for Disease Control has reported several cases of measles in Sabha, in southern Libya. OCHA Chad has received reports of measles-like symptoms among Chadians returning from Libya.

  • The Dhibat/Wazin border remains open and humanitarian partners are able to access and provide assistance to the Nafusa Mountains as far as Yafran via this border crossing. Access to Misrata has improved.

  • Over 70,500 Chadians and 81,591 Nigeriens have returned to their country from early March until 9 June. Increases in food prices and other economic factors continue to affect returnees, their families and communities they supported while working in Libya.

  • The US$407 million revised Regional Flash Appeal for the Libyan Crisis is currently funded at 51 per cent with $207 million committed and $1.6 million in pledges.

? The situation in the wider Abyei area remains tense with clashes reported on 15 June.

? The estimated number of displaced people has risen to nearly 113,000.

? Humanitarian partners continue to assess and respond to emergency needs of the displaced population, while also focusing on medium-term needs.

I. Prioridades/Puntos Destacados

? Durante los meses de abril, mayo y junio se registraron 719.160 personas afectadas. El acumulado 2010-2011 registra cerca de 3,7 millones de personas afectadas por la temporada invernal.

? El IDEAM mantiene alerta roja por deslizamientos en los Santanderes y el Piedemonte llanero, en la cuenca baja del rio Magdalena y en algunos tramos del rio Bogota, por niveles altos.

? La Administracion Nacional Oceanica y Atmosferica (NOAA) comunico que el fenomeno de La Nina se acabo en el Oceano Pacifico. No se espera al fenomeno de El Nino.

? El Secretario General de la ONU, Ban Ki-Moon, durante su visita a Colombia, expreso su preocupacion por las personas afectadas mas vulnerables.

? El Sistema de las Naciones Unidas y el Gobierno de Colombia trabajaron un acuerdo para la prosperidad que incluye el segmento de ayuda humanitaria, recuperacion temprana y la ola invernal.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

? Fighting continues around Kadugli, Kauda and Heiban.

? More than 61,000 people have been displaced by the recent clashes, with more than 35,000 people believed to be moving to El Obeid, North Kordofan.

? Humanitarian partners are providing life saving assistance wherever they can access vulnerable populations. More than 26,000 people have received food aid.
