Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 6/19/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Tropical Storm SIX-11 affected few people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and few people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, few people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge.

KEY DEVELOPMENTS:

Complex Emergency

. Internal displacement: Armed confrontations, landmines and killings triggered mass displacements in Norte de Santander, Cordoba, Antioquia and Cauca. In Guaviare department indigenous communities are at risk of mass displacement

. Children victims of violence in urban areas: Cases of SGBV against children and adolescents have been reported in Tumaco (Narino). In Medellin, there was an increase in the number of killings of children/youth under 18 and women during 2010 (24 and 4, 6% respectively)

. IDPs and leaders of land restitution processes continue to be targeted by armed groups

. Follow-up: Mobility restrictions and risk of displacement in Choco department. According to local sources, the mobility along Atrato River has gradually been improving. However, there is still fear among indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities in the region.

Natural Disasters
Rainy season: Rains and water levels are starting to decrease. However, there are still unmet humanitarian needs in some areas

PUNTOS DESTACADOS:

? Desplazamientos masivos: Cuatro eventos de desplazamiento masivo se registraron como consecuencia de combates, riesgo por minas antipersonal y homicidios. En Guaviare, comunidades indigenas Jiw estan en medio de las confrontaciones

. Ninos victimas de la violencia urbana: Organizaciones sociales denuncia el incremento en casos de violencia sexual basada en genero contra ninos y adolescentes en Tumaco (Narino). En Medellin, los menores siguen siendo vicitmas de la violencia entre ?combos?. De acuerdo con cifras del Instituto de Medicina Legal, se registro un aumento del 24% en el numero de homicidios de menores en Medellin durante 2010. El numero de homicidios de mujeres aumento en 4. 6%

. Lideres de poblacion desplazada asesinados en Antioquia y Norte de Santander. Preocupa la seguridad de los lideres y las victimas en el marco de procesos de restitucion de tierras

. Seguimiento a eventos pasados: Aunque se empieza a normalizar la movilidad por el rio Atrato, las autoridades locales reportan restricciones de movilidad en varios municipios del Choco.

Desastres Naturales

Aunque empiezan a disminuir los niveles de lluvia y el Fenomeno de La Nina ha se esta debilitando, aun persisten necesidades humanitarias en varias zonas.
