India: Water Stress in India (as of 4 May 2012) Fri, 11 May 2012 20:05:02 +0000 This map illustrates the extreme levels of water stress experienced across the Indian sub-continent. Extreme water stress to the north and northwest of Delhi coincides with major wheat, sugar and mint producing areas. This results in uncertainty over crop yields and greater food insecurity. Conflicts over water use and between water users can be highly emotive in India, as epitomised by the conflict over the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River in the extremely water stressed state of Gujarat, approximately 400km north of Mumbai. Businesses across multiple sectors in India can find themselves adversely affected by public opposition campaigns and legal challenge stemming from conflicts over water. With water resources expected to come under greater pressure as a result of climate change and rapid population growth, water-intensive industries such as beverages, steel and mining could find themselves increasingly at odds with small-scale farmers and rural villagers. This map is based on Maplecroft?s 2012 Water Stress Index. Country: India Source: Maplecroft |
