Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 12/04/2012

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

  • Provincial authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa request continued humanitarian assistance for more than 200,000 people displaced from Khyber Agency since January.

Turkey: Syrian Refugee Camps - Yayladagi, Yayladagi District, Hatay Province, Turkey (as of 4 April 2012) Wed, 11 Apr 2012 15:09:41 +0000

This map illustrates satellite-based area of refugee camp and tents detections in Hatay province of Turkey. No considerable changes in the organization (extension and number of tents) of Yayladagi camp were observed between 23 August 2011 and 12 February 2012. Around 65 new tents have been detected during this period.
The most significant changes were observed between 10 July 2011 and 23 August 2011 when a new area was populated and around145 new tents were erected.
This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field.

Somalia: Horn of Africa Drought: Country-based Pooled Fund Activity (as of 3 Apr 2012) Wed, 11 Apr 2012 14:39:08 +0000

An emergency of drought and food-security in the Horn of Africa made international headlines in July 2011 when famine was declared in parts of Somalia. By that time OCHA-operated country-based pooled funds in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia had already provided US$69 million for humanitarian response to address the crisis. The three funds allocated over $143 million to the emergency in 2011 and an additional $11 million as of 15 March 2012, bringing the total to $154 million.
