Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 11/1/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Rainfall & WASH Update

Normal rainfall has been received in southern and western Oromia, most parts of southern Somali, western half of Amhara, and Gambella and Beneshangul Gumuz Regions in the second half of October, with some areas experiencing above normal rainfall. Near normal rainfall was received in parts of Tigray, eastern Amhara, and other northeastern parts of the country, with below normal rains in some locations. As a result of the rains, the overall water trucking requirement has decreased from 78 trucks in the previous week to 39. Currently, 34 trucks are operating benefiting an estimated 68,000 people nationwide. Heavy rains in parts of eastern Somali Region (Birkot, Denan, Ferfer, Gunagado, Kebridehar, Kelafo, Maraato, and Mustahil woredas) have caused minor flooding. The regional Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Bureau (DPPB) has requested non-food items (NFIs) for some 2,225 flood-affected households. General Information

  • 4 million people, or 53% of the Somalia population, are in crisis countrywide based on August FSNAU figures- an increase from 3.7 million people in July. (FSNAU/FEWSNET)
  • Of the 4 million in crisis, 3 million people are in the southern regions of Somalia, a 7% increase from 2.8% million that were in crisis in July. (FSNAU/FEWSNET)
  • 750,000 people are in famine, a 46% increase from 350,000 in July (FSNAU/FEWSNET)
  • Famine has now been declared in Bay region of Somalia, the sixth area along with southern Bakool, parts of Middle Shabelle, Lower Shabelle, IDPs in the Afgooye Corridor and IDPs in Mogadishu. (FSNAU/FEWSNET)
  • Emergency conditions will persist well into the first quarter of 2012. (FSNAU/FEWSNET)
