Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 10/26/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Tropical Cyclone RINA-11 of Saffir-Simpson Category 3 affected 1.6 million people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and 227 thousand people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, 68 thousand people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

? Heavy rains in parts of Somalia have increased vulnerability to waterborne diseases while impeding access to populations in need.

? Continued insecurity and military activities at the Somali-Kenya border have restricted movement, causing a sharp decline of Somalis entering Kenya to 100 last week, down from 3,400 week before.

? Somalia?s CAP has increased to US$1 billion following changes in shelter and WASH requirements.

? Durante la ultima semana, 65 familias mas se desplazaron al corregimiento de Tierradentro.

? Cuarenta familias retornaron a sus veredas luego de varias semanas de desplazamiento en el corregimiento de Puerto Anchica

? Existen problemas generalizados de infecciones gastrointestinales en ninos y adultos debido a la deficiente manipulacion de alimentos y el escaso tratamiento del agua.
