Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 10/26/2011
This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Current tropical cyclones (source JRC and Pacific Disaster Center)
  | Automatic impact report (JRC)  RINA-11 in AtlanticPDC—26 Oct 2011   Tropical Cyclone RINA-11 of Saffir-Simpson Category 3 affected 1.6 million people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and 227 thousand people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, 68 thousand people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge. |

It was issued by OCHA in New York. It covers the period from 19 to 25 October 2011. The next report will be issued on 1 November 2011. I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES ? Heavy rains in parts of Somalia have increased vulnerability to waterborne diseases while impeding access to populations in need. ? Continued insecurity and military activities at the Somali-Kenya border have restricted movement, causing a sharp decline of Somalis entering Kenya to 100 last week, down from 3,400 week before. ? Somalia?s CAP has increased to US$1 billion following changes in shelter and WASH requirements. |
