Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 10/24/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Tropical Cyclone RINA-11 of Saffir-Simpson Category 1 affected 7 thousand people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and few people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, few people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

? State of emergency declared by the government in 12 departments.
? Main damages in Choluteca and Valle Departments.
? Improvement in weather conditions allows access to communities which have remained out of reach over the last week. Relief aid is starting to be delivered in these communities.
? Displaced people in shelters are also starting to return to their homes.
? Heavy rains in the North part of the country (Colon, Atlantida, Gracias a Dios and Islas de la Bahia departments) as a consequence of the arrival of the cold front; monitoring of the situation in place ongoing.
