Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 9/2/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

? Dans le cadre du Projet ? Appui agricole d'urgence en faveur des congolais expulses d'Angola ?, l?Organisation des Nations Unies pour l?alimentation et l?agriculture (FAO) a organise du 17 au 20 aout 2011 a Bandundu (Province de Bandundu) et a Moanda (Province du Bas-Congo), deux ateliers de formation sur les techniques de production maraichere et vivriere ainsi que sur l?utilisation et la combinaison des aliments. Au total, 40 techniciens des structures partenaires charges d?accompagnement des beneficiaires, des leaders des beneficiaires et des techniciens de l?Inspection provinciale de l?agriculture ont beneficie des nouvelles techniques culturales pour ameliorer la securite alimentaire des 1 700 menages refoules d?Angola et familles d?accueil vulnerables cibles.

Faits saillants :

  1. 20 attaques ayant fait 3 deces, 10 personnes enlevees dont 5 enfants ont ete attribuees a la LRA ce mois de juillet. Des chiffres malgre tout en baisse par rapport a juin.

  2. Samaritan?s Purse a distribue 107 tonnes de vivres du PAM a 6824 personnes deplacees, retournees et familles d?accueil en territoire de Faradje.

  3. MEDAIR, avec le financement de Pooled Fund, a construit 7 ponts d?une portee de 1,5 a 5 metres sur l?axe Isiro-Ango. Le pont metallique Bailey d?une portee de 240 metres a Dingila sera egalement rehabilite.

Update 1: Emergency Assessment of Somali IDP Shelter Concentrations in Mogadishu, Somalia (22 Aug 2011) Thu, 01 Sep 2011 08:06:05 +0000

Summary: A total of 226 spatially distinct IDP shelter concentrations were identified (as of 22 August 2011) within the urban extent of Mogadishu, representing an increase of 45 IDP sites since 28 July 2011. A projection of the total number of IDP shelter structures located in Mogadishu indicated a minimum estimate of over 41,000. Significant building damages were identified within the Bacaad Market area (Yaqshid district) following the offensive by AMISOM against al Shabaab positions on 28-29 July 2011. This report is based on a time-series analysis of Somali IDP shelter concentrations within the capital city of Mogadishu using satellite imagery recorded the mornings of 21-22 August, 28 July, 15 April and 30 March 2011. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field.
