Humanitarian Bulletin - Weekly Humanitarian Highlights in Ethiopia, 19 September 2011 Mon, 19 Sep 2011 12:53:05 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan (the) Refugee Update Somalia Refugees in Dollo Ado: The deteriorating situation in Somalia continues to drive new arrivals of refugees from Somalia into Ethiopia. Between 7 and 8 September, some 500 new arrivals were reported in the Dollo Ado area, up from less than 100 per day in the first week of the month. Relief efforts are ongoing, with interventions in health and nutrition still the priority. A drop in crude mortality rate (CMR) has been recorded in the Dollo Ado camps in recent weeks; however, the CMR remains well above the emergency threshold. For example, in Kobe camp the CMR reduced from 3.9 deaths per 10,000 people per day to 2 per 10,000 per day. The emergency threshold is 1 per 10,000 per day. The decline is attributed to a number of interventions being undertaken in the areas of health, nutrition and water provision, as well as food assistance and shelter. To support efforts to reduce the high rates of malnutrition recorded among refugee children, including those under six months of age, a five-day training of trainers on Breastfeeding Counseling and Management began on 13 September. UNICEF, IOM, ACF, Save the Children US, IMC and the Government?s Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs are supporting the training. UNICEF is also supporting hygiene and sanitation education in the camps to improve hygiene practices. In Hilaweyn camp, OXFAM, MSF-Holland, and UNICEF are working to establish a water supply system, expected to be finished by early October, for 10,000 refugees to get 10 litres per person per day. As of 10 September 2011, the total number of refugee population in Dolo Odo stands at 122,540. |
