Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 9/10/2011
This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Heavy monsoon rains over the course of last month have caused widespread damage, primarily in the southern province of Sindh. ? To date, monsoon rains have affected 22 out of 23 districts of Sindh causing 199 deaths and affecting close to 5 million people. ? To complement the government response, the international humanitarian response will immediately start alongside the preparation and launch of needs assessments and response plans. |
| Protection of Civilians Weekly Report 24 August ? 6 September Fri, 09 Sep 2011 12:58:53 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: occupied Palestinian territory Key issues Although during the reporting period there were no demolitions, the six week lull during Ramadan in Area C demolitions came to an end on 8 September, with the demolition of Palestinian structures by the Israeli authorities, including residences as well as water and electricity infrastructure. This occurred in spite of recent media reports indicating an alleged suspension of demolitions, citing inequality in the enforcement of planning rules on Palestinians compared to Israeli settlers. Since the beginning of 2011, a total of 755 Palestinians have lost their homes in these circumstances, more than in any of the previous three years. The demolition of three houses in the Migron settlement outpost on 5 September by the Israeli authorities triggered a number of ?price tag? retaliation attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians communities, including the burning of the first floor of a mosque. One of the main factors underlying the phenomenon of settler violence is the absence of adequate law enforcement, both in terms of preventive measures, as well as measures aimed at holding perpetrators accountable. |
