Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 7/24/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Tropical Cyclone DORA-11 of Saffir-Simpson Category 4 affected few people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and few people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, few people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge.

I. PRIORIDADES/PUNTOS DESTACADOS ? A causa de enfrentamientos armados en la zona, al menos 346 personas (84 familias) se han desplazado de la comunidad de Caimito, en zona rural de Guapi, hacia otras comunidades del rio Guapi.

? Este es el tercer desplazamiento masivo que se presenta en el municipio en los ultimos 2 meses. Se preve que las hostilidades en la zona continuaran.

? Se ha suspendido el inicio de las clases debido al uso de escuelas como albergues.

The crisis at a glance

? On 20 July, a famine was declared in southern Bakool and Lower Shabelle regions of Somalia.

? Eight other regions of southern Somalia are at risk of famine in the coming 1-2 months unless aid response increases in proportion to needs.

? 11.6 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance in the Horn of Africa region.

? Refugee influxes from Somalia into Kenya and Ethiopia continue, with an exodus of 3,500 people a day arriving in the past week in areas of Ethiopia and Kenya.

? More than 20,000 new refugees await registration and accommodation in Dadaab while a new camp is not yet operational pending Kenyan government authorization to begin relocation of refugees.

? Out of the US$ 1.87 billion in humanitarian requirements for Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, more than $1.1 billion has been committed, but a shortfall of $829 million remains as of 22 July.

Highlights:

  • The number of returns to South Sudan since last autumn stands at more than 325,400. Emergency assistance in key sectors is underway to returnees that have recently arrived in Renk in Upper Nile.

  • At the height of the lean season, close to 1 million people are receiving food assistance.

  • The first consolidated appeal was launched on 20 July to fund relief efforts in the first critical few months of the new Republic of South Sudan.
