Key Overall Developments

Humanitarian update

On 28 June, the Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FANAU) issued an update saying that the overall number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in Somalia is now 2.85 million. This means one in three Somalis is affected, a 42.5 per cent increase from 2 million since August 2010 and a 19 per cent increase from 2.4 million reported in January 2011. The majority of the affected population is in the south, 61 per cent, where there is extremely limited food assistance due to insecurity. FSNAU will update the figures in August following a countrywide post-harvest assessment when the full impact on the total population will be known.

Due to the desperate situation of lack of food and limitations to response in much of the south, reports indicate that unconfirmed numbers of people from Bay, Bakool and Lower Shabelle regions are now flocking into Mogadishu where they can access assistance. The newly displaced are joining the more than 85,000 people benefiting from cooked meals from 20 feeding centres across Mogadishu on a daily basis. WFP has plans to further expand the wet feeding sites and targeted supplementary feeding to accommodate the increasing numbers. In addition, WFP is actively working to find ways to reach people in desperate need in the south of Somalia. Other interventions in Mogadishu include 16 nutrition centres and 15 health centres providing maternal and child nutrition and health services to more than 290,000 people. At least 60,000 new arrivals have received non-food items including tents.

The situation could further deteriorate in the south, if expanded interventions do not take place immediately. The humanitarian community is calling on all parties, especially those that control the areas affected by the crisis, to allow access to alleviate the people?s suffering. The support of the donor community is also needed to be able to provide an adequate response to the crisis and prevent further deterioration.
