Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 7/1/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

  • Concerns about disruptions to public food distribution, as food stocks depleted faster than replenished.

  • Urgent requirement to replenish depleted medical supplies and equipment in Libya.

  • Power shortages affect the water supply in several areas.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Government of Sudan has granted access to areas in Kadugli town where partners have their offices. Unhindered access to the affected population continues to be denied.

  • GoS and SPLMN representatives signed an agreement on political and security arrangements in Blue Nile and South Kordofan states.

  • Fighting reported across South Kordofan State from 25-28 June with civilian casualties reported.

  • Three UN staff members were released, but two remain in custody in Kadugli.
