Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 7/14/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Tropical Cyclone MA-ON-11 of Saffir-Simpson Category 4 affected few people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and few people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, few people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge.

Epidemie de cholera dans le Bandundu, en Equateur et a Kinshasa

L?epidemie de cholera declaree dans trois provinces de l?ouest de la RDC, notamment dans le Bandundu, l?Equateur et a Kinshasa continue de progresser. Les statistiques compilees renseignent qu?au 12 juillet, un total de 1 927 cas et 126 deces ont ete rapportes, soit une progression du nombre de cas de l?ordre 16% par rapport a la situation au 04 juillet 2010.

Bien que la Province de Bandundu reste toujours la plus affectee avec 1 271 cas et 72 deces, la progression dans la Ville de Kinshasa est la plus forte allant de 31 a 51 cas enregistres en pratiquement une semaine. Neanmoins, aucun deces supplementaire n?a ete rapporte a Kinshasa et l?epidemie reste circonscrite dans le quartier Kingabwa, dans la Commune de Limete, ainsi que dans la Commune de Maluku. Deux Centres de traitement de cholera (CTC) y sont installes par les ONG Medecins sans frontieres (MSF) et Cooperatione Internationale(COOPI).

Dans le Bandundu, la situation reste particulierement inquietante a Bolobo, Yumbi et Kwamouth. Par ailleurs, en Equateur ou 605 cas et 52 deces sont rapportes au 12 juillet, deux nouvelles zones de sante (ZS) viennent de rapporter des cas suspects : la ZS de Bikoro et celle de Ndage. Les situations les plus critiques sont rapportees dans les ZS de Mankanza avec 192 cas, Wangata avec 125 cas, Lukolela avec 69 cas et Mbandaka avec 48 cas. Les resultats d?une partie des evaluations conduites par des acteurs humanitaires sont prets et certaines interventions, en appui au plan de reponse du Gouvernement, ont deja commence.

C?est ainsi queLa Federation internationale de la Croix-Rouge (FICR) appuie la Croix-Rouge de la RDC (CRRDC) dans les activites de sensibilisation, d?assainissement et de desinfection. Grace au financement recu du Fonds Urgence de la FICR, 1 000 volontaires de la CRRDC seront deployes dans les trois provinces.

Natural Disasters

23 earthquakes measuring 5.0 or above on the Richter scale (RS)occurred in Indonesia during June. This follows the trend of recent months, with 27 occurring in May and 19 in April 2011. The most significant earthquake in June was the 6.5 RS to strike Papua on 26 June, resulting in one fatality. A 6.9 RS earthquake also struck Northern Sulawesi on 13 June, but there were no casualties. In addition, two earthquakes with magnitude 5.5 RS hit Northern Sumatra on 14 June, resulting in 50 injured peo-ple, heavy damage to 217 houses, medium damage to 51 houses, light damage to 1,569 houses, landslides, and electricity outage in 13 villages of 4 sub districts (Pahae Jae, Pahae Julu, Purba Tua, and Simangumban). The local government, with the support from BNPB, has responded to the emergency situation.

Heavy rains in June caused flooding in Bali, Southeast Sulawesi,
West Papua, Gorontalo, Central Maluku, and East Kalimantan. The worst flood resulted in 2 fatalities, 1 missing person, and 4 injured, while causing 31 houses to be washed away, light dam-age to 24 houses, and heavy damage to 30 houses, two bridges as well as other public facilities. Local government, with support from local military, and BNPB, has responded to the emergency situation.

In addition, strong winds occurred in Aceh and Northern Su-lawesi during June. The most significant of these was in Aceh where 3 houses in Ulee Kareng Sub District, Banda Aceh City, were damaged.

Furthermore, the emergency situation in Dieng Plateu due to the eruptions of toxic gas carbon monoxide ended by 12 June, following the reduction in concentration of the gas.The status was consequently revised from level 3 to level 2 on 10 June. Villagers were permitted to return to their homes but re-mained forbidden to come within a 500 metre radius of Tim-bang Crater.
