Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 6/9/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Tropical Cyclone ADRIAN-11 of Saffir-Simpson Category 3 affected few people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and few people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, few people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge.

  • La distribution de tentes et de baches a commence.

? La Sous-secretaire generale aux affaires humanitaires des Nations Unies, Mme Catherine Bragg, a acheve le 4 juin sa visite de cinq jours en Republique Democratique du Congo, une visite qui l?a conduite successivement a Kinshasa, Dungu, Bunia et Bukavu. Au terme de sa visite, au cours d?une conference de presse tenue a Kinshasa, Mme Bragg, s?est dit choquee par l?immensite des souffrances recurrentes et le peu d?attention accordee aux besoins des populations vulnerables. Elle a plaide pour que l?aide humanitaire atteigne les personnes vulnerables vivant dans des localites peu accessibles, soit du fait de l?insecurite ou du manque de route et infrastructures. Un tel accroissement va de paire avec une meilleure protection tant des communautes que des acteurs humanitaires. Mme Bragg a indique que mettre un terme aux conflits et instaurer plus de stabilite en RDC afin de reduire les besoins humanitaires relevait d?un effort conjoint entre le Gouvernement, la communaute humanitaire, les bailleurs de fonds et tous les partenaires nationaux et internationaux.
