Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 6/10/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Tropical Cyclone ADRIAN-11 of Saffir-Simpson Category 3 affected few people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and few people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, few people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

  • Between 30,000 and 40,000 people are believed to have fled Kadugli since the outbreak of fighting on 6 June

  • Heavy fighting has continued throughout the day in parts of South Kordofan, hindering humanitarian access to conduct needs assessments

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

  • Humanitarian partners estimate that more than 100,000 people may have been displaced from the Abyei area in the last three weeks. Partners continue to monitor population movements as the situation remains fluid.

  • With more people returning to Agok, the humanitarian presence and activities in the area have also increased.

  • The shortage of fuel for operations and the impact of the rainy season on access to affected locations remain pressing logistic concerns in the ongoing response.

? Selon de nouvelles estimations, 23 personnes ont trouve la mort, 8 ont ete blessees et 6 sont portees disparues suite aux pluies torrentielles et coulees de boue survenues dans la nuit du 6 au 7 juin

? Les evacuations vers des abris communautaires et la distribution de tentes, de baches et d?articles non alimentaires ont commence

? Le drainage des camps de personnes deplacees, des Aquatabs et jerricans supplementaires sont des besoins urgents

I. PRIORIDADES/PUNTOS DESTACADOS

Este informe es un producto de la Sala de Situacion Humanitaria. Cubre el periodo del 01/06/2011 al 07/06/2011. El proximo informe sera publicado aproximadamente el 15/06/2011.

  • Durante los meses de abril y mayo se registraron 612.873 personas afectadas. El acumulado 2010-2011 registra mas de 3,5 millones de personas afectadas por la temporada invernal.

  • El IDEAM anuncio que sigue tiempo llovioso en las regiones Caribe, norte de la Andina, norte de la Pacifica y Orinoquia.

  • El Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas, Ban Ki-moon, llega el 10-13 de junio a una visita oficial a Colombia, invitado por el Gobierno Nacional. Parte de su agenda es visitar zonas afectadas por la emergencia invernal.

  • Una mision interagencial en zonas afectadas por el Canal del Dique en Atlantico y Bolivar (mayo 2011), encontro brechas importantes especialmente en los sectores de Alojamiento Temporal y Ayudas No Alimentarias, WASH, Educacion en Emergencias, Salud y Recuperacion Temprana.
