Health Update

Measles, meningitis, acute watery diarrhoea (AWD) and malaria continue to be the main public health emergency concerns in the country. During the past week, 48 suspected measles cases were reported from Adiyo and Gesha woredas of Keffa zone, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples region (SNNPR). This is a decline in the number of new cases reported from the two woredas in recent weeks, from 281 cases three weeks ago to 74 cases the following week and 48 cases in the previous week. Meanwhile, the measles vaccination campaign, which started on 10 February in all woredas of Keffa zone and adjacent woredas of Gamo Gofa zone, has been completed. Out of 469,876 children between the ages of 6 months and 15 years targeted by the campaign, 457,035 were reached (95.8 per cent coverage). Enhanced surveillance and active case identification and management continue in areas affected by ongoing measles outbreaks. Elsewhere, new suspected measles outbreaks were reported from Ankasha woreda of Awi zone (Amhara Region) and Dibat woreda of Metekel zone (Beneshangul Gumuz Region). The respective Regional Health Bureaus (RHBs) and WHO are currently conducting outbreak investigations. In response to an outbreak of meningococcal meningitis, a team composed of the SNNPR RHB, Ethiopian Health and Nutrition Research Institute (EHNRI) and WHO has been deployed to Kembata Tembaro and Wolayita zones. The team will conduct surveillance and case identification and management in eight woredas of the two zones zones, where 40 cases of meningococcal meningitis have been reported since the beginning of January. The team has also brought medical supplies, including drugs, laboratory and other medical equipment to the area.

In Beneshangul Gumuz, 45 AWD cases were reported from Dibat woreda during the past week, increasing the number of reported cases to 256 since the first week of February. A critical shortage of potable water is suspected to be the main cause of the outbreak: many hand pumps are either dysfunctional (45 per cent) or in poor condition. However, the AWD outbreak has reportedly been brought under control through the concerted efforts of the Government, WHO and UNICEF. In Beneshangul Gumuz region, a localized outbreak of malaria has been reported from Kurmuk woreda of Assosa zone. Case management has been initiated and a regional health team is currently conducting detailed investigations. For more information, contact: who-wro@et.efro.who.int

Somalia: Atlas of Somali Water and Land Resources (as of 5 March 2012) Mon, 05 Mar 2012 17:22:08 +0000

The ?Atlas of Somali Water and Land Resources? is a collection of maps that display the data stored in SWALIM?s archives. Most of these data derive from original data collection and processing done by SWALIM and supplemented by data provided by partners and collaborating agencies. Another source of data is the SWALIM library, where most of the existing reports, grey literature and other sources of information on water and land of the country are kept.

The Atlas is designed to give a broad overview of the natural resources of the territory. It is organized into five chapters: Administrative Boundaries, Physical Environment, Climate, Water, and Land. In these chapters you will find maps with different degrees of detail, ranging from the Horn of Africa perspective (see for example the maps on the drainage basins) to the very local (see the town plans from satellite images). In between, national and regional maps present a number of themes related to water and land resources.

Somalia: Atlas of the Juba and Shabelle Rivers (as of 5 March 2012) Mon, 05 Mar 2012 17:18:27 +0000

The principal source of information for the Atlas of the Juba and Shabelle Rivers is the aerial photographic survey conducted in January-February 2008 (see full dataset information in 6.0). This user-friendly Atlas contains maps and data of the two perennial rivers of south Somalia and their catchments. Development and emergency interventions that deal with water and land resources in the region will benefi t from the richness of the information contained in the Atlas. The Atlas is divided into three parts; Part one presents the whole river basin and the land, drainage and climatic features over the entire extent of the Juba-Shabelle transboundary river basin: Part two and three present general features with detailed descriptions of the Shabelle and Juba Rivers in 12 sections. For each section of the Rivers, the following features are covered to demonstrate techniques of using the dataset at very large scale, and their application to a variety of pursuits.

Major physical characteristics: Catchments and drainage network, terrain and slopes, general morphology of the rivers and surrounding fl oodplains, cross sections of the rivers at major locations, etc. Water Resources: Hydrology and surface water, fl ow hydrographs at key locations, mean annual runoff in the sub-basins, potential fl ood areas, rainfall variation and water resources, etc. Land Resources: Crop types and other vegetation types, major soils, length of growing period, etc. Irrigation: Irrigation infrastructure such as barrages and primary and secondary canals, major irrigation schemes, cross sections of canals, etc. Settlements and road networks. You can download the atlas at this link

The Atlas is provided with a DVD which contains a complete digital copy of the printed version as well as a full set of thematic maps for the entire extent of the area surveyed. To get a copy send a request to swalim@fao.org

  1. Nice post. Thanks for sharing. I hope that preventative measures can be put in place soon. One thing that can be done which costs nothing is each individual take responsibility for their garbage and put it where it belongs instead of throwing it all over the streets, rivers, and everywhere else.
