Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 1/28/2012

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Tropical Cyclone FUNSO-12 of Saffir-Simpson Category 4 affected 3.3 million people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and 500 thousand people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, 83 thousand people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge.

? Deteriorating food security remains a major concern in parts of South Kordofan and Blue Nile affected by the conflict.

? The Government issued new directives on conditions for UN agencies and international organisations to return to South Kordofan and Blue Nile and how to operate in these states.

? Spontaneous returns to areas north of the Bahr el Arab/Kiir River continue in the Abyei area, but no large-scale returns have yet been reported.

Key issues

  • Electricity cuts due to increased demand in Gaza have triggered a rise in the use of unsafe methods of heating, such as burning charcoal. This week, two people died due to suffocation inside their house as a result of such methods.

  • Over 50 people were displaced in Area C this week, in the context of demolitions in the Jerusalem periphery.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

  • On 23 January 2012, the Department of Public Health and the Afghan National Disaster Management Authority in Ghor Province reported a suspected measles outbreak resulting in the unconfirmed death of 15 children in two villages of Sarij and Gawkushta, Jawand district, Badghis.

  • Medical response teams are unable to reach the area as access is affected by the recent heavy snowfalls.

  • The Governor of Ghor has requested the use of a helicopter to deploy a medical team which is currently unavailable.

Damage assessment of the urban area affected by TS Sendong (16 to 18 Dec 2011): this analysis following damage analysis is based on satellite imagery from 19.12.2011 and predisaster satellite imagery from 05.03.2010 provided by UNOSAT.
The figures on building damages likely represent minimum estimates. Actual damages could be higher.This is an initial damage assessment and has not yet been validated on the ground.
