Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 12/10/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

I HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

? More than 80,000 people have been affected by flooding in Kenya. The Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts heavy rainfall and risk of more flooding for December.
? Heavy rains and insecurity continue to hamper humanitarian operations in Kenya and Somalia.
? The Kenyan parliament this week approved the African Union request for the Kenya Defence Forces to join the African Union Mission in Somalia.
? The Somalia and Kenya 2012 Consolidated Appeals will be launched in Nairobi on 13 and 15 December respectively.

? Poursuite des operations de rapatriement volontaire et spontane des refugies ivoiriens du Liberia a l?ouest du pays. ? Visite a Duekoue, a l?ouest de la Cote d?Ivoire d?une delegation de l?Union africaine (UA) du 2 au 4 novembre.

? Signature a Lome d?un accord tripartite entre les Gouvernements ivoirien et togolais et le Hautcommissariat des Nations Unies pour les Refugies (UNHCR) le 15 novembre.

? Retour volontaire de personnes deplacees internes du site de la mission catholique de Duekoue dans leurs milieux d?origine.

? Publication de l?enquete de suivi post-distribution aupres de 240 beneficiaires dans 20 villages situes a proximite de la frontiere du Liberia (Toulepleu, Zouan-Hounien et Bin-Houye) du 14 au 21 octobre par le Programme Alimentaire Mondial (PAM).

? Publication, le 23 novembre par le sous Cluster Protection de l'Enfance, avec le soutien de Save the Children et l?UNICEF, du rapport intitule Vulnerabilites, violences et violations graves de droits de l'enfant.

? Visite en Cote d?Ivoire du 21 au 26 novembre de Mme Margot Wallstrom, Representante Speciale du Secretaire general des Nations Unies chargee de la question des violences sexuelles commises en situation de conflit.

Key issues

  • The Israeli authorities demolished 22 Palestinian-owned structures in east Jerusalem and Area C of the West Bank, displacing 17. since October; the Israeli authorities demolished 48 Palestinian-owned structures in the Jerusalem governorate displacing 115 people, compared to 30 structures demolished and 33 people displaced in the first nine months of the year.

  • According to the Ministry of Health (MoH) in Gaza, 120 essential medicines and 140 items of medical supplies are completely out of stock. According to the Central Drug store, medicine for the treatments of cancer, anesthesia, dialysis, and hemophilia have all run out from hospitals and warehouses in the Gaza strip, leaving many patients at risk.
