Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 11/6/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

This report is produced by OCHA in collaboration with humanitarian partners. It covers the period from 14 September to 3 November. The next report will be issued on or around 8 December.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

? A total of 28,547 people in Basilan and Zamboanga Sibugay had been displaced following armed confrontations between armed forces and rebel groups as reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on 28 October.

? Insecurity is impeding humanitarian response in pockets of Central and Western Mindanao.

? Nutrition screening of 21,000 conflict and flood-affected children in 14 municipalities in Maguindanao, North Cotabato and Cotabato City revealed 218 cases of acute malnutrition.

SITUATION OVERVIEW

  • First declaration of famine: 20 July 2011.

  • Many parts of Somalia receiving heavy rains in past few weeks, with floods in Gedo and Mogadishu. In Lower Juba, rains have made roads impassable.

  • Outlook: Situation deteriorating with all regions in the south at risk of reaching famine conditions. Floods may affect tens of thousands of Somalis. Rains have also increased risk of waterborne diseases to result in increased number of deaths.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

? The Security Council condemned human rights violations by authorities and other actors in Yemen, calling for better access and more humanitarian assistance.

? Violence has continued in key cities across Yemen, including Sana?a and Taiz.

? Ongoing fighting in Abyan has sparked renewed displacement and growing humanitarian needs.

? During the reporting period,the deaths of 14 children were reported with a further 13 injured in fighting in Sana?a, Taiz, and Hadramout.

? Essential services in Sana?a and other urban centres continue to be severely disrupted.

? Many schools remain closed due to occupation by IDPs from Abyan, affecting over 100,000 children.

? Concerns over the accuracy of IDP figures in the south threaten to undermine operations.

? Final preparations for the 2012 CAP are underway which will reflect significant scaling up of humanitarian requirements.
