Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 11/27/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

I HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

? Bay, Bakool and Lower Shabelle regions of Somalia were this week reclassified from ?Famine/Humanitarian Catastrophe? to ?Humanitarian Emergency?. Humanitarian needs however still persist, with 250,000 out of a previous 750,000 Somalis still at risk of starvation.
? Heavy rains and insecurity continue to impede humanitarian access to both drought- and conflict-affected people in north-eastern Kenya, Dollo Ado in Ethiopia and Juba in Somalia.
? Approximately 10,000 out of an estimated 27,000 refugees living in Ifo 2 East Camp in Kenya have been displaced by floods following heavy rains during the past month. ? WHO has confirmed cases of Acute Watery Diarrhoea/cholera in the Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya, in Burhakaba, Mogadishu and Qhansadheere in Somalia and Obok region in Djibouti. ? A batch of Unimix, a cereal blend donated to drought-affected children across the country, was found to be contaminated with aflatoxin.
