Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 11/25/2011

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Tropical Cyclone KENNETH-11 of Saffir-Simpson Category 4 affected few people with winds above 39mph (63 km/h) and few people with hurricane wind strengths (74mph or 119 km/h). In addition, few people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge.

This report is produced by OCHA in collaboration with humanitarian partners and issued by OCHA Pakistan. It covers the period from 17 to 23 November 2011. The next report will be issued on or around 1 December.

I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES

? Humanitarian partners and Government of Pakistan authorities are working to finalise the Revised Response Plan to provide humanitarian assistance in Sindh and Balochistan provinces following the monsoon rains and subsequent floods that occurred in August and September. A recently completed joint UN-Government Multi-Sectoral Needs Assessment (MSNA) revealed that more than 5 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in the two provinces.

? Provision of shelter and rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure and livelihoods of people returning to their homes in areas where floodwaters have receded are key priorities for humanitarian partners.

Highlights:

? Humanitarian assistance continued to 23,000 refugees in northern Unity State displaced from Sudan?s Southern Kordofan, with one week?s worth of food aid delivered during the week.

? Between 10,000 and 15,000 refugees are estimated to have fled to the border areas of Upper Nile State following fighting in Blue Nile State in Sudan, according to UNHCR.

? A rebel militia attack in Jonglei?s Pigi County on 16 November killed at least 15 people and left an unconfirmed number displaced.
