This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Monthly Humanitarian Update - September 2011 Sun, 16 Oct 2011 15:15:25 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Afghanistan Key Points ? The assassination of former-President and current Chairman of the High Peace Council, Mr. Rabbani, re-sulted in a Presidential statement that Afghanistan would halt negotiations with the Taliban, instead focus-ing upon direct talks with Pakistan. ? Relationships further deteriorated in late September with on-going shelling of Afghani villages by Pakistani forces in the border province of Kunar. ? Violent conflict renders more than 472,000 Afghans displaced, with 167,000 in first seven months of the year. UNHCR estimates 18,206 displaced during the month of August alone. ? 1.4 million non-refugee Afghans who wish to regularise their stay in Iran for work reasons have been is-sued exit permits by Iranian authorities to leave for Afghanistan and then seek a work visa from the Iranian consulates based in Afghanistan. ? On 29 September, the Government of Afghanistan represented at Ministerial level and humanitarian com-munity representatives lead by the Humanitarian Coordinator conducted a coordination meeting on the response to the slow onset drought impacting up to 3 million in 14 provinces in the North, Northeast and West of Afghanistan. |
