Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 10/1/2011
This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

In addition, 42 thousand people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge. |

| Horn of Africa Drought Crisis Situation Report No. 16 Fri, 30 Sep 2011 19:39:47 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan (the) I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES ? The estimated mortality rate for children in Somalia is 15.43 deaths per 10,000 individuals a day, above the famine threshold of 2 deaths per 10,000. ? A notable decline in crude mortality rate has been reported in the Dollo Ado camps in Ethiopia, from 4-5 deaths to 1.1 deaths per 10,000 persons per day in Kobe. ? Over 5,000 people have been affected by a dengue fever outbreak in Kenya, with cases tested positive in Somalia. ? More than $218 million of new humanitarian aid was pledged at the UN Mini-Summit on the crisis in the Horn of Africa. |
| Protection of Civilians Weekly Report 21-27 September 2011 Fri, 30 Sep 2011 10:26:07 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: occupied Palestinian territory Key issues This week, settler violence and related incidents remain high, resulting in the killing of two Palestinians, of whom one was a child, and two Israelis, including one child, in the West Bank. Over 900 Palestinian-owned trees were damaged by settlers, bringing this year?s total to 7,500. This week, five workers were killed and seven others injured while they were working inside tunnels under the Egypt-Gaza border. Amid the ongoing Israeli blockade, Gazans continue to rely extensively on goods transferred through the tunnels into the Gaza Strip. |

 Flood Affected Areas Along Cagayan River, Cagayan Valley Province, Philippines UNOSAT 30 Sep 2011 3:03:23 PM This map presents the standing flood waters over the affected districts in Cagayan Province, Philippines, folowing the tropical cyclone ?Pedring? as based on analysis of satellite imagery collected on 29 September 2011. Please note that the exact limit of the flood waters is uncertain because of the relatively low spatial resolution of the satellite sensors used for this analysis, Detected water bodies likely reflect an underestimation of all flood-affected areas within the map extent.
