Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 9/7/2011
This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

| South Kordofan and Blue Nile Situation Report No. 17 Wed, 07 Sep 2011 01:38:54 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Sudan (the), Ethiopia This report is produced by OCHA in collaboration with humanitarian partners covering the period 3 September ? 6 September 2011. I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES ? Sporadic fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Sudan People?s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) continues to be reported in Blue Nile State ? At least 50,000 people have fled their homes as a result of the fighting in Blue Nile State. Meanwhile, the Government is assisting some people to return to Ed Damazine town. ? UN agencies and international humanitarian organizations have not been granted permission to travel to Sennar State and secure parts of Blue Nile State to assess the situation and assist in providing emergency relief. |

It was issued by OCHA in New York. It covers the period from 31 August to 6 September 2011. The next report will be issued on 13 September 2011. I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES ? Famine has now been declared in the Bay region of Somalia, bringing the number of affected areas to six. ? 4 million people, more than half of the Somali population, are in crisis countrywide ? an increase from 3.7 million people in July. Of these, 3 million people are in the south. ? 750,000 people are at risk of death in the coming four months without an urgent scale up. ? 65,700 cases of pneumonia and acute respiratory infection reported in central and south Somalia since January. ? Limitations on humanitarian access continue to curtail the humanitarian response. |

| West Bank Movement and Access Update August 2011 Tue, 06 Sep 2011 13:02:08 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: occupied Palestinian territory Executive Summary The period between July 2010 and June 2011 was characterized by the absence of significant changes in the system of movement restrictions implemented by the Israeli authorities within the West Bank territory to address security concerns. This system has continued to hinder the access of the Palestinian population to livelihoods and basic services, including health, education and water supply. In a comprehensive survey completed by the end of this period, OCHA documented and mapped a total of 522 obstacles (roadblocks, checkpoints, etc) obstructing Palestinian movement within the West Bank, a four percent increase from the equivalent figure recorded in July 2010 (503).1 Similarly, almost no changes were observed in the other components of the system of movement restrictions, including the Barrier, the permit and ?prior coordination? regimes to access the ?Seam Zone? or settlement areas, and the closure of areas for military training. Regarding access to and from the main towns and cities (excluding East Jerusalem), the lack of improvement observed during this period contrasts with the previous two years. Between July 2008 - June 2010 the Israeli authorities implemented a relatively large number of relaxation measures, which contributed to reducing travel time and resulted in less friction between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers at checkpoint |

 Update 2: Continued Expansion of Somali IDP Camps in Hodan, Mogadishu, Somalia (4 Sept. 2011) UNOSAT 6 Sep 2011 12:48:18 PM Analysis Summary: Within central Hodan district of Mogadishu there has been a dramatic expansion in the total number of IDP camps and shelter structures, strongly suggesting a increase in the total IDP population within this area of several thousand people. Between 22 August and 4 September 2011, a total of 12 new IDP shelter concentrations were erected, with the additional expansion in size of 9 existing camps. A total of approximately 1,500 IDP shelters were erected within the new camp sites, along with approximately 1,000 additional newly erected shelters within the existing camps, making a total expansion of at least 2,500 shelter structures over a two week period. Further, there is at least one new camp site location under construction approximately 12,600m2 in size which should be operational within days. This report is based on a time-series analysis of Somali IDP shelter concentrations within the capital city of Mogadishu using satellite imagery recorded the mornings of 4 September, 21-22 August, 28 July, 15 April and 30 March 2011.  Atlas of Somali IDP Shelter concentrations in Mogadishu, Somalia (As on 22 August 2011) UNOSAT 6 Sep 2011 11:46:50 AM This atlas provides detailed geospatial information identifying the current location of spatially-distinct IDP shelter concentrations within Mogadishu as identified from satellite imagery recorded on 21-22 August and 28 July 2011.It is based on a detailed analysis report available here : http://www.unitar.org/unosat/node/44/1581 . This atlas is produced by UNITAR/UNOSAT in support of international humanitarian assistance in the Horn of Africa following the extreme drought and has been designed for easy printing and readability on A4 and A3 paper.
