Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 9/4/2011
This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

| South Kordofan and Blue Nile Situation Report No. 16 Sat, 03 Sep 2011 01:17:14 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Sudan (the), Ethiopia This report, which has been expanded to also include developments in Blue Nile State, is produced by OCHA in collaboration with humanitarian partners. It covers the period 25 August ? 2 September 2011. I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES ? Fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Sudan People?s Liberation Movement ? North (SPLM-N) breaks out in Blue Nile State ? Thousands of civilians from Kurmuk in southern Blue Nile State flee into Ethiopia ? Despite the unilateral ceasefire declared by the Government of Sudan on 23 August, hostilities between SAF and SPLM-N continue in South Kordofan State |
| Humanitarian Trends January ? June 2011 Sat, 03 Sep 2011 01:04:02 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Colombia ? Between January and June 2011, OCHA registered 59 mass displacements, mainly following armed hostilities, affecting close to 17,500 people. ? Since February 2011, threats against and killings of civilians have increased. Frequently targeted are: public officials, teachers, candidates for the upcoming local elections, individuals claiming back their land, IDP leaders and indigenous people. ? Armed hostilities have intensified in the departments of Cauca, Antioquia, Valle del Cauca, Narino, Arauca and Cordoba, leading to an increase in mass displacements and civilian casualties in these areas. ? For the period January-May 2011, mine action authorities report 213 victims of anti-personnel mines and unexploded ordnances. Of these, 34% were civilians. The use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) remains a further concern. ? In the first half of 2011, more than a million people were affected by natural disasters, in particular floods and landslides. This followed unusually intense rains which had peaked in August and November 2010, and had affected close to 4 million people by June 2011. |
| Yemen Emergency Situation Report No. 8 Sat, 03 Sep 2011 00:35:54 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Yemen, Somalia This report is produced with inputs from the Humanitarian Country Team in collaboration with its partners. It was issued by OCHA Yemen country office. It covers the period from 15 August 2011 to 30 August 2011. The next report will be issued on or around 13 September 2011. I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES ? Conflict continues in particular in Arhab and Abyan Governorates. Access remains a challenge in many parts of the country and humanitarian organizations continue to collaborate to find solutions in obtaining increased access. ? Humanitarian partners are working closely with the Government to find alternative accommodation for IDPs currently living in schools in Aden ? The nutrition cluster is increasing monitoring and developing response actions following the recent nutrition assessment in Hajjah governorate, which revealed alarming levels of malnutrition. ? The outbreak of cholera in Abyan is under control. However cases of acute watery diarrhea have been reported in neighbouring governorates, showing the potential for further deterioration of the health situation. ? Agencies are finalizing the Response Plan for Sa?adah and Northern Governorates, including Hajjah, as well as the Response plan for South. Another strategy is being formulated to address the needs of the non-displaced populations affected by the socio-economic crisis. ? Funding against the Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan rises 4% to USD 159 Million. |
