Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 8/25/2011
This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

In addition, 167 thousand people are living in coastal areas below 5m and can therefore be affected by storm surge. | ||

Boletin Humanitario No. 21 - Agosto 1 - 21 de 2011 Wed, 24 Aug 2011 21:04:16 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Colombia TEMAS DESTACADOS: Graves hechos de violencia generan desplazamientos en Cordoba: Masacres, amenazas y homicidios selectivos han disparado la crisis humanitaria del departamento en 2011. A la fecha se registran 15 eventos de desplazamiento entre multifamiliares y masivos en el departamento. Continuan los desplazamientos en la region del Pacifico: La crisis humanitaria del Pacifico se manifiesta con mayor fuerza en los frecuentes desplazamientos masivos y en las dificiles condiciones de la poblacion que llega desplazada a zonas urbanas. En algunas zonas, el acceso de entidades gubernamentales se esta viendo afectado por la presencia de grupos armados estatales y no estatales, lo que dificulta aun mas la atencion de las comunidades mas vulnerables. Poblacion civil en alto riesgo en el sur de Bolivar, Putumayo y Guaviare: Durante el periodo en revision se registraron dos masacres en el sur de Bolivar, presuntamente relacionadas con disputas de grupos armados no-estatales y post-desmovilizacion por el control de recursos y rutas. En Guaviare, se registro un nuevo ataque a mision medica amenazando la atencion de comunidades vulnerables y en alto riesgo. En Putumayo, los ninos, ninas y adolescentes han sido victimas frecuentes de amenazas y reclutamiento por parte de grupos armados no-estatales. IDEAM pronostica fuertes lluvias para la segunda temporada invernal 2011: El escenario actual se caracteriza por un contexto de alta vulnerabilidad por el Fenomeno de la Nina pasado, en donde se tienen niveles medios y alto de las cuencas, saturacion de suelos, comunidades en alojamientos temporales (albergues, carpas, cambuches, etc), muchas de las obras de mitigacion estan en ejecucion o por iniciar. |

OVERVIEW OF FLOOD WATERS IN LOWER SINDH PROVINCE, PAKISTAN UNOSAT 24 Aug 2011 1:53:23 PM This map presents the standing flood waters over the affected Provinces of Lower Sindh,Pakistan following recent heavy monsoon rains.This analysis is based on crisis satellite imagery collected by MODIS sensors on 19 August 2011. Please note that the exact limit of the flood waters is uncertain because of the relatively low spatial resolution of the satellite sensors used for this analysis. Detected water bodies likely reflect an underestimation of all flood-affected areas within the map extent.
