Somalia Drought Situation Report No. 5 Tue, 02 Aug 2011 00:27:14 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya This report is produced by OCHA in collaboration with humanitarian partners. It was issued by OCHA Somalia. It covers the period from 29 to 31 July 2011. The next report will be issued on or around 3 August 2011. Disclaimer: While all efforts have been made to verify the information contained in this report, OCHA cannot guarantee complete accuracy. However, in the event of misreporting, corrections will be made in subsequent editions. I. HIGHLIGHTS/KEY PRIORITIES ? One quarter of Somalia?s 7.5 million people have been displaced, either within Somalia or to neighboring countries. ? There are an estimated 1.25 million children across southern Somalia in urgent need of life saving interventions, 640,000 of whom are acutely malnourished. ? In July, southern Somalia received 653 metric tons of Corn Soya Blend, enough to feed more than 65,000 vulnerable children; approximately 230 metric tons of therapeutic food to treat 16,000 severely malnourished children; as well as a donation of 40 tons of nutritional food supplies from the Kuwait Government to assist malnourished children. |
OCHA Somalia ? Humanitarian Access, Reporting Period: 01 to 30 June 2011 Mon, 01 Aug 2011 21:07:37 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Somalia MAIN ISSUES DURING THE REPORTING PERIOD The security situation throughout Somalia remained unpredictable during the reporting period. No major fighting was reported in any part of the country with the exception of some sporadic clashes between the TFG forces and Al Shabaab in the capital Mogadishu. Throughout Somalia, approximately 24,000 people were displaced due to the conflict and also due to the consequences of the drought in June. Approximately 4,300 were reported to have fled Mogadishu and 4,100 were reported to have moved to areas within the city. |
Cote d?Ivoire Situation report # 13, 1 August 2011 Mon, 01 Aug 2011 17:17:01 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Liberia I. Highlights/Key priorities The United Nations Operation in Cote d?Ivoire (UNOCI) is planning to deploy military personnel in the West. Eight military camps, including one in Tai, will be established along the Ivorian-Liberian border in order to beef up security. Humanitarian effort in Cote d?Ivoire receives a boost with the release of US$ 6million from the Central Emergency Relief Fund. The EHAP remains largely underfunded with only 23 percent of the financial requirement received. Large number of return of IDPs and Refugees is being observed, which requires urgent humanitarian assistance. |
Humanitarian Bulletin - Weekly Humanitarian Highlights in Ethiopia, 1 August 2011 Mon, 01 Aug 2011 14:36:29 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Ethiopia, Somalia According to the Government?s Early Warning and Response Directorate of the Disaster Risk Management and Food Security Sector (DRMFSS), Ethiopia faces food shortfalls, particularly with regard to the availability of corn-soya blend (CSB) in the food assistance pipeline. Reduced rations of CSB were already distributed during previous rounds, and based on allocations for the fifth round of relief food 50 per cent of beneficiaries across the country will continue to receive reduced rations of CSB and pulses. Whilst a full ration should comprise 4.5kg of CSB, beneficiaries in DRMFSS-covered areas (2.3 million) will be provided with a ration of 2.5kg; beneficiaries in JEOP-assisted areas (1 million) will receive 3.5kg and beneficiaries in WFP-covered areas of Somali Region (1.2 million) will receive 3kg. As the food pipeline continues to be underfunded, the next rounds of relief food are likely to be distributed at reduced rations, which may exacerbate malnutrition in the drought-affected areas. Donor pledges and contributions towards the July-December 2011 Humanitarian Requirement Document (HRD) will be critical to bridge gaps and ensure coverage. The Government and its partners are working to address severe delays in dispatch and distribution of food assistance in Somali region which occurred as a result of security problems constraining the WFP operation. Following the decision to resume the operation, the percentage of the third and fourth round allocations delivered in Somali have increased from 15 to 40 per cent and 58 to 73 per cent respectively.
