Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 7/29/2011
This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

Boletin Equipo Humanitario 02 - Equipo Humanitario de Pais y Colombia Humanitaria responden a comunidades mas necesitadas por Ola Invernal Thu, 28 Jul 2011 16:25:06 +0000 Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Country: Colombia Editorial Equipo Humanitario de Pais y Colombia Humanitaria responden a comunidades mas necesitadas por Ola Invernal El Fondo Nacional de Calamidades de Colombia aprobo cerca de 10.000 millones de pesos colombianos para acciones prioritarias del Plan de Respuesta a la emergencia invernal 2010-2011 del Equipo Humanitario de Pais. Trabajo coordinado con el Sistema Nacional de Atencion Integral a la Poblacion Desplazada, SNAPD, y la Direccion de Gestion del Riesgo, DGR. El Coordinador Residente/ Humanitario presento el Plan de Respuesta como un documento estrategico al Gobierno Nacional, dando respuesta inmediata ante la emergencia invernal de inicios de ano, que se considera la mas severa registrada en los ultimos 60 anos en el pais. El Gobierno anuncio que los recursos provendran de la subcuenta de Colombia Humanitaria y seran canalizados por Sistema de Naciones Unidas y ejecutados por el EHP. Los proyectos que se derivan del Plan de Respuesta se desarrollaran en el Choco (Cuencas del Rio Baudo y Litoral de San Juan), Cauca (Guapi, Timbiqui y Lopez de Micay) y Narino (El Charco). Estas zonas fueron seleccionadas usando criterios de doble afectacion (el conflicto armado y Ola Invernal), estan consideradas de dificil acceso y complementan las acciones del gobierno. Esta respuesta humanitaria esta planteada en forma integral e intersectorial ya que incluira proyectos coordinados desde los sectores de agua y saneamiento e higiene, albergues, salud, seguridad alimentaria y nutricion, medios de vida y educacion. Los proyectos seran intervenciones de emergencia y se desarrollaran en un periodo de 6 a 9 meses. La implementacion de las acciones en estas zonas permitira brindar asistencia humanitaria a cerca de 60,000 personas y reducira vulnerabilidades frente a una nueva temporada de lluvias, ya que es de esperarse que las zonas mas afectadas por el fenomeno de la Nina tambien sean seriamente impactadas por la temporada de lluvias de 2011. El Plan de Respuesta de la comunidad internacional permitiria fortalecer la institucionalidad local, asi como organizaciones de la sociedad civil, hacer monitoreo y seguimiento a la respuesta de emergencia, basada en los principios humanitarios, en un momento politicamente delicado como el periodo de elecciones locales y departamentales. |

Pre-Crisis Atlas of Dolo, Ethiopia & Somali Border Town of Doolow UNOSAT 28 Jul 2011 1:52:29 PM This atlas provides detailed pre-crisis satellite imagery coverage over the main border crossing for Somali refugees entering Ethiopia, over the border towns of Dolo, Ethiopia and Doolow, Somalia. It is produced by UNITAR/UNOSAT in support of international humanitarian assistance in the Horn of Africa following the extreme drought. The atlas is based on pre-crisis satellite imagery acquired in October 2010 and has been designed for easy printing and readability on A4 and A3 paper. Individual map sheets were designed at 1:2,500 scale. Emergency Assessment of the Border Town of Dolo, Ethiopia (as of 17 July 2011) UNOSAT 28 Jul 2011 10:28:23 AM This rapid assessment of the Ethiopian border town of Dolo was done at the request of UNHCR in support of emergency humanitarian planning in the area following the recent influx of Somali refugees. Satellite imagery acquired on 17 July 2011 over the town was assessed for a number of thematic issues covering the possible presence of refugee/IDP settlements in the area, transportation, hydrology, rainfall and cultivation. This is a preliminary assessment and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send feedback to UNITAR/UNOSAT at the contact information below.
