Highlights/Key priorities

? US $2 billion will be needed to address the situation in the Horn of Africa. Some $1 billion has been received. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon today called on donor countries to come up with the additional $1 billion needed to meet expected needs.

? 11.6 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance in the Horn of Africa.

? Refugee influxes from Somalia into Kenya and Ethiopia continue, with approximately 3,500 people arriving each day.

? WFP is considering food drops to parts of Somalia where the agency is as yet unable to access affected communities.

Yemen Humanitarian Emergency Situation Report No. 5 Mon, 25 Jul 2011 15:06:08 +0000
Source:  UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs
Country:  Yemen

Highlights/Key priorities

? The fuel price on the black market has risen 567% over normal prices and the average price of main food commodities has increased by 43% since the start of 2011.

? These price increases are aggravating the humanitarian needs in Yemen, while also significantly increasing supply costs for the delivery of assistance.

? Conflict is ongoing in Abyan, and has resulted in approximately 91,000 IDPs in southern Yemen.

? Access and security challenges in Al-Hasaba, Arhab, Al-Jawf and Abyan continue to hamper provision of humanitarian assistance.

? Unverified reports state that 200-500 families are newly displaced in Al-Jawf and 1-2,000 families are displaced in Arhab and Amran due to renewed conflict.

Refugee Update

More than 112,000 refugees from Somalia are currently in the Dollo Ado area in the Somali region. As the three existing refugee camps of Bokolomanyo, Melkadida and Kobe are at or over maximum capacity, preparation of a fourth camp at Hilowen is being finalized. The current priorities for the refugee response in Ethiopia are nutrition and health; water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); and shelter. The Ethiopian Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA),
UNHCR and WFP continue to provide food to all sites, while Save the Children-US is providing targeted supplementary feeding (TSF) for children under 5 years. MSF-Spain is providing health and nutrition support, including nutritional screening, treatment of severe acute malnutrition and measles vaccinations for children under 5 at the reception and transit centre sites, and has begun provision of primary health care at Kobe camp. UNHCR and UNICEF are planning an Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) campaign. International Rescue Committee (IRC) is providing water for Melkadida and Kobe camps, while Lutheran World Federation (LWF) will take over WASH support for the transit and reception sites. Shelter, of which there is a shortage in the camps, is being bolstered with support from Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), which is bringing in 10,000 tents. UNHCR continues to receive shelter and non-food items by airlift and to dispatch them to Dollo Ado. For more information, contact, gegziabk@unhcr.org & ocha-eth@un.org
