Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 1/5/2010

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. GDACS currently covers earthquakes, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions and floods. The color coding (red, orange, green) is related to the estimated humanitarian impact of the event.

2010/01/04 HONIARA, Solomon Islands, Mon: A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck near the Solomon Islands in the western Pacific today with the potential to cause a local tsunami, seismologists said. The US Geological Survey said the 7.2 magnitude quake was measured at a depth of about 30km and struck about 103km from the town of Gizo.
